What is a lead magnet, and how do you choose the right one?
In brief
A lead magnet is a resource or experience offered in exchange for the data needed to continue the relationship. It works when it solves a specific problem, demonstrates expertise and leads to a coherent next step without making disproportionate promises.
A lead magnet is content, a tool or an experience that provides concrete value in exchange for some data and the consent needed to continue the relationship. It may be a guide, template, calculator, webinar, checklist, trial or assessment.
The name may suggest bait, but a good lead magnet does not hide its intention. It states what the person will receive, which data is required and what happens next. If the content is weak or too generic, the resulting contact will mean very little.
How do you choose an effective lead magnet?
Start with a segment and a specific problem. The resource should help the person make recognisable progress: reach a decision, assess a situation, avoid a mistake or produce an artefact. “The complete guide to success” promises too much. “Checklist for preparing an e-commerce migration” defines the context and result.
Connect the subject to the offer without turning the material into a brochure. The resource should be useful before purchase and demonstrate how the company approaches the problem. The next step should feel natural.
Also assess the effort required. A simple template may be more useful than a long ebook. The format matters less than the ability to answer a concrete question.
Which formats work at different stages?
Checklists, glossaries, maps and short guides may work during the initial stage. Templates, benchmarks, cases, webinars and calculation tools become useful during evaluation. Assessments, demonstrations, trials and discussion sessions may make sense closer to the decision.
In B2B, the resource often needs to be shared with other decision-makers. A document that structures requirements or comparison can circulate within an organisation. Speed and immediate application may carry greater weight in B2C.
Do not automatically lock all content behind a form. Fundamental answers can remain accessible while the download adds independent utility. This preserves credibility and allows organic search to understand the content.
How much data should you request?
Ask for what is needed to deliver the resource and manage the stated follow-up. A name and email may be sufficient for content. A personalised assessment may require more information. Every field creates friction and a management responsibility.
If you want to use data for different purposes, make them understandable and verify the applicable legal basis. The GDPR establishes principles including transparency, purpose limitation and data minimisation. A download does not automatically constitute consent for every future communication.
Avoid forms asking for telephone number, revenue and role without explaining why. They may reduce conversion or encourage false information, lowering database quality.
How do you distribute a lead magnet?
Design distribution together with the resource. Connect it to relevant guides, campaigns, newsletters, social media, events and sales conversations. Adapt the promise to the context while keeping the advert, page and received material consistent.
Prepare delivery and follow-up before launch. People should immediately receive what was promised. Subsequent communication should add value and respect their level of interest rather than beginning an aggressive sequence.
Check the mobile experience, accessibility, file size and duration. A PDF that is unreadable on a phone or a webinar without captions reduces actual usefulness.
How do you measure a lead magnet?
Measure visits, form completion, cost, data quality, resource use and subsequent actions. Where possible, observe opportunities and customers generated over time. A high download rate may result from a broad promise and produce irrelevant contacts.
Compare versions and segments. Look at where people stop and ask sales or support whether the material improves conversations. Update the resource when processes, data or references change.
Success does not mean owning more email addresses. It means creating a fair exchange: the person receives concrete help and the company gains an interpretable signal through which it can continue the relationship appropriately.
When should you update or retire the resource?
Assign an owner and review date. Data, screenshots, references and procedures may age while the file continues generating downloads. An obsolete resource damages trust at the very moment it should build it.
Retire or combine lead magnets that attract the same audience without creating distinct value. Too many resources make selection harder, fragment data and increase maintenance. If a page has links or traffic, preserve it and explain where to find the updated version rather than leaving an error or missing download.
